Fascination Papier
Exhibition in the Gustav-Lübcke-Museum
from august 15th 2022 to january 16th 2023
For as long as paper has existed, people have been fascinated by this material Because paper embodies delicacy and strength, fragility and firmness, it is as intangible as it is haptically attractive. No other material in art is so sensual, present and changeable. Artists from all over the world show that amazing artistic and aesthetic works that conquer space can also be developed from paper. Many of the artists work like sculptors, they experiment with unfamiliar techniques and re-stage the supposedly fragile material. Often it is important to get involved in order to discover the subtleties, but this special art is all the more lasting.
The Gustav-Lübcke-Museum in Hamm shows how infinite the design possibilities are when dealing with paper in the next big exhibition Fascination Papier from August 15, 2022 to January 16, 2023. 30 renowned international artists who have dedicated themselves to paper in their oeuvre and have mastered this material brilliantly are invited. In the architecturally impressive skylight hall of the museum, meticulous origami objects, collages, transparencies, sculptures, silhouettes - including three-dimensional cut-outs - and installations can be seen on more than 500 square meters. Sprawling rooms made of paper and cardboard not only demonstrate the interest in the mate-rial, but also the desired interaction with the location for which the works are created.
It should become clear that art made of paper is not exclusively a purely aesthetic phenomenon, but also borrows from architecture, engineering, natural science and mathematics. In addition, the museum guests will discover that paper art often also conveys messages about ethical, political and social issues such as exclusion and violence. And last but not least, discovering the value and durability of the material is of great importance. Upcycling, recycling and sustainability are evident in the paper art shown and set an example for the future.
An extensive and entertaining accompanying program with lectures, artist talks, themed tours, workshops and theater performances deepen the access to paper art with further aspects.
